Your Social Media Accounts Can Testify Against You

In the old days, musicians used to promote their music and their performances by taping posters to telephone poles and selling cassette tapes out of the trunks of their cars. Today, they can reach an exponentially bigger audience by posting their music on social media and updating their content with new photos frequently to stay on their audience’s minds. The ubiquity of social media means that people get a lot more attention; when was the last time you went 24 hours without clicking on social media content that someone posted and then questioned whether this was what deserved your attention? It also means that the smallest details get documented, and any of it has the potential to become evidence in a criminal case. In the old days, recordings made surreptitiously by undercover police officers and confidential informants were the only way that the prosecution could show the jury evidence of something you didn’t know that you had said or done. Today, all your misdeeds and bad intentions are in full view online, ready to bear witness against you if the prosecution wants them to do this. If you are facing drug charges because police believe they saw you possessing or consuming drugs on social media, contact a Tampa drug crime lawyer.
Recording Artist Arrested After Posting Picture on Instagram Showing a Bag of Drugs
One evening in May 2026, bystanders called police to a parking lot on Fairvilla Road in Orange County and reported that they had heard gunfire. The police found two cars in the parking lot with their engines running and a group of people gathered around the vehicles. One of the people that they arrested was a Florida-based recording artist who has previously been the focus of legal cases related to drugs. In this instance, they found a small bag in his possession, and a crime lab revealed that the substance in the bag was MDMA.
As the investigation continued, police discovered that the bag they had found in the artist’s possession was the same as one that had been visible in a video he had posted on Instagram several months earlier. Because the weight of the MDMA found in his possession was more than ten grams, he is facing charges for trafficking in MDMA.
MDMA, sometimes called ecstasy or molly, is a Schedule I controlled substance that produces euphoric effects and has been known to be fatal in case of overdose. MDMA was first synthesized in 1912, but it has never been approved for medical use, mostly because amphetamine is as effective as MDMA as a stimulant. MDMA gradually gained a following as a recreational drug, beginning in the 1960s. As with other psychedelics, it has its proponents calling for its use to treat mood disorders, but as of 2026, it has no legally approved medical uses.
