P2P Is Like Methamphetamine But Much More Potent

Drug7

Those “just say no” slogans from the 1980s and the “your brain on drugs” public service announcements from the 1990s may be laughable, but old folks are onto something when they say that the drugs they messed around with when they were not as dangerous as the drugs on the street today.  No, Grandpa, the cocaine you snorted at Studio 54 was not more innocent than crack; even the law has finally realized that.  Many other drugs, however, have been steadily getting stronger.  The protagonist of the opioid abuse epidemic has changed from prescription pain pills to heroin to fentanyl like so many video game bosses, and today’s weed is more potent than your grandparents’ doobies and their parents’ reefer.  Even meth has a terrifying younger sibling.  If you are being accused of possessing or selling methamphetamine or other illegal drugs, contact a Tampa drug crime lawyer.

Meet Super Meth, the New Supervillain of Controlled Substances

From a medical perspective, methamphetamine is a central nervous system.  It causes prolonged alertness and decreases appetite.  For this reason, its close relative amphetamine has been favored by professional night owls such as truckers and touring musicians, as well as by image-conscious celebrities and their doctors.  From a legal standpoint, methamphetamine is a Schedule II controlled substance.  This means that it is legal for medical use, although it is rarely used in medicine except when no alternatives are available or acceptable.  For example, cocaine is a Schedule II controlled substance, because for every 999 recreational users who snort it to stay skinny and exuberant at the disco, there is one surgeon who applies it topically to prevent bleeding during eye surgery.  Methamphetamine can be used as a weight loss drug or a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) for patients who have not responded to other stimulants.

Super meth is a contemporary of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Synthesized in Mexico and sold inexpensively in the United States, it was first detected in U.S. forensics labs in 2019.  Its active ingredient, phenyl-2-propanone (P2P) is an even more powerful stimulant than the methamphetamine characteristic of the backyard meth labs of the Breaking Bad era.  Furthermore, super meth is more than twice as pure than conventional methamphetamine, increasing the risk of long-term psychiatric effects and fatal overdose.  One could even say that super meth is to meth what fentanyl is to heroin.

As with drug powders that may or may not contain fentanyl, you may not know that you are buying super meth.  Therefore, if you are accused of possessing it or providing it to someone else, it is especially important to work with a criminal defense lawyer.

Contact Tampa Criminal Defense Attorney Bryant Scriven

Meth may be less dangerous than super meth, but being accused of possessing it is still a serious matter.  A criminal defense lawyer can help you advance the best defenses or seek a plea deal if you are accused of crimes involving methamphetamine, super meth, or another illegal drug.  Contact Scriven Law in Tampa, Florida to schedule a consultation.
