NBA Player Pleads Not Guilty To Sports Betting Conspiracy Charges

Much like weed, gambling seems to occupy a legal gray area. It is against the law except when it isn’t. Casino gambling is illegal in Florida but legal on tribal land, where federal laws apply, but state laws do not. You can buy lottery tickets from gas stations in Florida until you are broke, but this is because the lottery is a state-sponsored program that benefits the public purse; by this logic, playing the lottery is not so different from paying taxes. You probably should not play a game of poker with your neighbors in your living room on a Friday night, but you probably will not get criminal charges if you do. Sports betting, once a harmless hobby between friends, has become a big business, and there are even some compelling think pieces out there about how it is destroying society in ways that Facebook rumors and Instagram face could not do. The biggest legal problems come not to those who bet small amounts of money on the outcome of individual games, but on those who try to influence the outcome in exchange for money. If you are facing criminal charges arising from sports betting activities, contact a Tampa white collar crime lawyer.
Is Sports Betting Ever Legal in Florida?
If you want to bet on sports games in Florida, Florida lawmakers have enacted legislation to allow you to do so. Much like legal weed requires legal cannabis dispensaries, legal sports betting requires legal sports betting apps, and as of December 2025, Florida has only one, namely Hard Rock Bet.
Miami Heat Player Accused of Faking Injury to Benefit Bettors
Terry Rozier has stayed on the right side of the law, but he is currently facing criminal charges in connection for his alleged involvement in a sports betting conspiracy when he played for the Charlotte Hornets. In December 2025, Rozier pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors gave Rozier’s legal team thousands of pages of evidence documents and gigabytes of computer files, since due process of law requires prosecutors to disclose to defendants the evidence they plan to use at trial, so that defendants have a fair chance to build their defense.
The charges stem from a March 2023 game between the Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans. Rozier left the game after playing for less than ten minutes after apparently suffering a foot injury. Prosecutors allege that he got injured on purpose in order to benefit conspirators who had bet that Rozier would leave the game early. Despite this, Rozier’s lawyers are confident that the evidence against him is so flimsy that the court will drop the charges before the case gets to trial.
